The Town of Edgewood has planned several civic education and engagement events to mark our Nation's 250th Anniversary. Learn about the history of our Nation's founding and America's Story.
On July 4, 1776, our Founders signed the Declaration of Independence, and it was sent to King George III as a notice of separation from England - the colonies were uniting as states to form a new Nation.
The following three events have been planned to recognize the symbols and ceremonies that contribute to our civic pride. Community members of all ages are encouraged to participate.
- February 21 - Flag Retirement Ceremony - why a flag is removed from service and how to retire it with honor and respect.
- June 12 - Flag Raising Ceremony - campers in the YES! program will learn how to do a flag raising ceremony and demonstrate for the community at Town Hall.
- July 4 - Reading of the Declaration of Independence - marking the 250th Anniversary, community members will publicly read sections of the document; information about its meaning will be on hand.
Saturday, February 21 at 12:00PM at Venus Park
The American Legion, Post 22 of Estancia, graciously offered to conduct the Flag Retirement Ceremony.
What is a Flag Retirement?
An American flag should be retired when its condition no longer allows for a dignified display. While the timing may not always be clear, there are unmistakable signs that a flag has fulfilled its purpose and deserves a respectful retirement. Recognizing these signs ensures the flag’s symbolic integrity is upheld.
Signs Your Flag Needs Retirement
Certain visible signs indicate that a flag is no longer suitable for display. These forms of wear detract from the flag’s ability to serve as a proud emblem:
- Frayed edges or torn fabric
- Faded colors caused by prolonged exposure to sunlight, rain, or wind
- Holes or brittle material that compromise its appearance
- Separated seams, particularly where the stripes or the blue field meet, signifying structural damage
Friday, June 12 at 10:00AM at Town Hall
What is a Flag Raising Ceremony
Raising and lowering the American flag with respect honors our nation's symbol of unity. The flag should be hoisted briskly to the peak of the flagpole to symbolize our national vigor and unity. The flag should be gently and ceremoniously lowered at sunset, unless it is illuminated throughout the night.
This summer, YES! program campers will be learning how to perform at Flag Raising Ceremony. They will learn the symbolism of parts of the flag and why it is handled with respect at all times. They will learn to fold a flag properly and how it is to be carried.
- YES! program campers will form a Color Guard.
- With other campers respectfully observing, the Color Guard will raise the American Flag at Town Hall.
- Then, the Color Guard will salute the flag and all present will recite the Pledge of Allegiance.
- The Color Guard will retreat and audience will be dismissed (campers will return to camp activities).
