Berrendo Pipeline

Public Meeting on July 14, 2026, at 4:00 pm in Town Hall Commission Chambers.

The New Mexico Sustainable Water (NMSW) Pipeline Project (aka Berrendo Pipeline) is a proposed regional water supply project designed to help address long-term water shortages in New Mexico's Middle Rio Grande Corridor, where approximately 65% of the state's population resides. The project would import and deliver up to 30,000 acre-feet of treated water annually from a sustainable source outside the region to supplement existing Rio Grande, San Juan-Chama, and groundwater supplies that have been strained by population growth, drought, and declining aquifer levels. New Mexico Sustainable Water has conducted extensive water rights, engineering, environmental, economic, and hydrologic studies and is pursuing agreements with municipal utilities and other users to provide a reliable long-term water supply for the region.

Submitted Questions and Answers (some are combined and paraphrased from original questions):

Is this the same project, with the same people involved, that was protested, and ultimately stopped by the state engineer in 2017?

  • No; that may have been the San Augustine Ranch project west of Socorro that the submitter of the question may be referencing. This is not the same project and not the same people involved in the proposed project.

Is this pipeline going through Campbell Ranch?

  • No; it will pass by Campbell Ranch, but it will not go through it. The notion that this is a "pipeline to supply water only to Campbell Ranch" is simply unfounded and not true.

Does this privatize our water forever?

  • No; the two current privately owned water utilities are private entities that Edgewood residents obtain water from every day; this is another company potentially making water available to Edgewood and other areas. No different that obtaining water from other utilities, this proposed project does not "privatize" anything.
