Profile

The year 2000 Census of population for the Town of Edgewood defined the municipality as having 1,893 people residing within the corporate limits on April 1, 2000.  As reported in the 2000 Census Data, the total population, number of housing units, and number and size of households are presented below in Table 1.  The average household size in Edgewood is larger than the average household sizes in comparison with the State and Nation.

At this time, there are 4 subdivisions under construction and 2 approved Master Planned communities.  When they are completed, the population will increase by approximately 13,993.

 Income

The median household income, of Edgewood ($42,500) is generally higher than the nearby municipalities of Moriarty  ($25,150) and Tijeras ($34,167), and the State of New Mexico ($34,133) as well.  The per capita income is higher ($18,146) when compared to the other governments, but significantly less than Santa Fe County ($23,594).  The percentage of households living below the poverty level in Edgewood (10.9 %) is quite a bit less than Santa Fe County (23.3%).  The percentage of individuals living in poverty in the United States during 1999 was 12.4%.

  Employment

Almost two thirds of the Edgewood residents who were age 16 and over were reported to be in the labor force;  98.2 percent of whom were employed.  The percentage of the Edgewood population that is in the labor force (62.6) is similar to both Santa Fe County (66.8) and the State (60.2).  However, the unemployment rate (1.8 percent) is significantly lower than Santa Fe County (4.7 percent) and the State (7.3 percent).
